Dryers
Dryer thermal fuse keeps blowing: find what is overheating it
A dryer thermal fuse that blows again and again is a symptom. Crawl-space vents in older houses, stuck thermostats, grounded elements and slipping blowers.
Dryers · gas and electric · Edmonds
Half of Edmonds heats with gas, so gas dryers are common in the houses, while condos and apartments mostly run electric units on long vent runs. We repair both, test the venting at the machine and quote in writing before any work.

Dryers in Edmonds split roughly along the city’s housing lines. Detached houses, especially in Esperance, Woodway and the older hillside streets, often have a gas stub already in the laundry and a gas dryer to match. The condos on the hill and the apartment buildings along Highway 99 mostly run electric dryers, many of them stacked over a washer in a closet, venting through an interior wall and out the far side of the building. Both kinds stop heating, squeal or take forever, but the reasons are not the same.
On a gas dryer the usual suspects are a weak igniter or tired gas valve coils; on an electric one, a burned element, a blown thermal fuse or a failed thermostat. Underneath many of these failures sits a vent problem, which is why your technician measures airflow at the back of the dryer before replacing anything. A fuse that blew because the vent is choked will blow again, and we would rather tell you that than come back for it. Stacked units add one more step, since the dryer often has to come off its washer or out of the closet for roller and belt work.
What you seeDrum turns but an electric dryer gives no heat at all
Likely causeThermal fuse open, element burned through or a thermostat failed
What we doTest each with a meter, replace the failed part, check the vent
What you seeGas dryer heats briefly, then goes cold mid-cycle
Likely causeGas valve coils weakening as they warm up
What we doReplace the coil set and watch several ignition cycles
What you seeLoads take two or three cycles to dry
Likely causeLint packed in the vent run or a crushed transition hose
What we doMeasure airflow, clear what we can reach, advise on the rest
What you seeThumping or squealing as the drum turns
Likely causeWorn drum rollers, idler pulley or glides
What we doReplace the worn rollers or pulley and inspect the belt
What you seeDryer will not start, only clicks or hums
Likely causeBroken belt, failed door switch or a seized motor
What we doTest the switch and motor, then replace the failed component
What you seeClothes come out damp although the cycle ends
Likely causeMoisture sensor bars coated with dryer-sheet residue
What we doClean the sensor bars, test the control, adjust settings
About 16 percent of Edmonds homes are in buildings of 20 units or more, and many others are in smaller condo blocks. In these buildings the dryer often vents through a duct that runs well past the length a manufacturer recommends, sometimes with several bends, sometimes up through the roof. Lint settles in the bends, airflow drops, and the dryer runs hot until a fuse or high-limit thermostat opens. We clean the transition hose and the first section of duct and check the airflow, but clearing a long shared run inside the walls is building maintenance, so we tell you clearly when the restriction lies there.
The weather plays a part too. Edmonds falls in the convergence zone, so outdoor drying is rare from fall through spring, and the dryer carries most of the load for longer stretches than it would east of the mountains. A machine that runs every day wears rollers, belts and drum glides faster, and a roof-vented dryer in a damp climate can collect condensation in the duct, which turns lint into a paste that clings to the walls. In the gas-heated houses, worn coil sets on the gas valve are a frequent fix.
Gas safety is the one firm rule. If you smell gas near the dryer, do not flip switches or unplug anything; get everyone out of the house and call PSE or 911 from the yard or the street. We look over the gas connection during every gas-dryer repair, and we tell you if the flexible connector behind the machine is an old style that should be replaced. Electric dryers have their own supply check. They need both halves of a 240-volt circuit to heat, so a drum that turns while the dryer stays cold can be a half-tripped double breaker in the panel, and we look at that before opening the dryer.

Dryer work starts at $229 for the simpler repairs, with boards and gas components higher up the table. That is a starting point for the category, not a quote. Once the $95 diagnostic is complete, your technician writes the actual figure, and the diagnostic charge is applied to the repair you approve. Every Edmonds neighborhood pays the same rate, and a washer checked on the same trip gets $10 off its own diagnostic. Ask about up to $18 off the repair for seniors 65+, veterans and active-duty military households when you call.

Dryers are the most repairable appliance in the house. The parts that fail most, igniters, coils, fuses, elements, rollers and belts, are modest jobs on nearly every brand, so a fifteen-year-old Whirlpool or Maytag with a good drum is still worth keeping. The exceptions are a drum rusting through, a seized motor on a machine near twenty years old, or a control board on a budget model where the board alone approaches the price of a new dryer. In a condo with a long vent, remember that a new dryer will suffer the same restriction; fixing the airflow does more for the next machine than any feature on it. If you are thinking of switching from gas to electric or the reverse, ask; we can tell you what the existing hookup supports, though a new gas line or 240-volt circuit is a job for a plumber or electrician.
Manufacturers publish a maximum length for their vents, usually given in straight feet with a deduction for each bend, and many condo runs exceed it. Your manual lists the figure for your model. If the dryer needs more than one cycle and the outside flap barely moves while it runs, the run is restricted. We measure airflow at the machine and tell you whether the dryer or the duct is the issue.
Stop using it until it is checked. A hot smell usually means lint near the heat source, or a vent so restricted that the safety thermostats are working overtime. Clean the lint screen, look at the hose behind the machine for kinks, and do not run it unattended. If the smell is gas rather than heat, treat it as a gas leak and leave the house before making any calls.
That pattern points to the gas valve coils. The igniter glows, the coils should then open the valve, and if one coil is weak the flame never catches or drops out once warm. It is a common repair on older gas dryers in Woodway and Esperance. Your technician tests the igniter and coils, replaces the failed set and runs the dryer through several cycles to confirm.
Yes. Laundry centers from Whirlpool, Frigidaire and GE, where the dryer and washer share one frame, are common in Edmonds condos. Many repairs are made from the front or top without separating them; some, such as drum rollers, need the unit pulled out from the wall. Clearing a path into the closet and knowing where the water shutoff is makes the visit go faster.
Yes. Each repair comes with a written warranty, and its terms are printed on your paperwork. If the problem we fixed comes back, call us and we return to it. A different failure later, say a roller after we replaced an igniter, is a new repair with its own estimate, and we will tell you up front which it is.
