Repairs

What we fix, and what we don't

Six families of household appliance, from the garage freezer to the wall oven. Each card below names the faults we run into most and the price where that kind of repair begins.

Refrigerator & freezer repair

Side-by-sides, French-door models, top- or bottom-mount freezers and panel-ready built-ins, plus upright and chest freezers. We replace fans, defrost heaters, thermistors, start relays, water valves and control boards when a section runs warm or frosts up.

from $259

Washer repair

Top-loaders, front-loaders and stacked washer-dryer units. Typical jobs: a door lock that won't release, a drain pump clogged by a sock, a worn belt, tired suspension, an inlet valve that dribbles, or an unresponsive control board.

from $239

Dryer repair

Gas and electric dryers, including the stacked pairs in condo closets. Heating elements, igniters, gas valve coils, thermal fuses, drum rollers and belts are routine; we also check airflow at the vent, because restriction keeps killing parts.

from $229

Oven, range & cooktop repair

Ranges, wall ovens and cooktops in gas or electric: bake and broil elements, oven igniters, temperature sensors, surface elements, infinite switches and control boards. Smell gas? Leave the house and call PSE or 911 from outside.

from $255

Dishwasher repair

Built-in dishwashers that won't drain, fill, heat or latch, or that leak at the door. With water as soft as ours, we also look at detergent dosing, since overuse etches glasses and fills the tub with suds.

from $249

Ice maker repair

Ice makers inside the freezer or feeding the door dispenser. We trace slow or stalled production to the inlet valve, the fill tube, the ice maker module or the freezer temperature itself, then repair what we find.

from $289

Inside a repair visit

Your technician starts by asking what the appliance did and when, then watches it try to run. Fault codes get read, the outlet and breaker get tested, and suspect parts such as a valve coil, a thermostat or a door switch are checked with a meter instead of being swapped on a hunch. When the cause is clear, you get a written estimate before any repair begins.

Because common parts travel with us, many repairs finish on the spot. When something has to be ordered, we tell you roughly how long it should take and come back to fit it. Every completed repair comes with a written warranty. The prices on these cards mark where each category begins; the number that counts is the one on your estimate once the diagnostic is done.

Work we don't take on, said up front

Some failures belong to other trades, and you should hear that during the first visit rather than after a second one. We don't take on:

  • refrigerator sealed-system repairs: compressor replacement, refrigerant leaks, recharging
  • commercial refrigeration
  • furnaces, heat pumps, air conditioners and other heating or cooling equipment
  • microwaves and small countertop appliances
  • household wiring beyond the appliance's own cord

If the diagnosis lands on one of these, your technician says so right away and helps you think through repair or replacement: the age of the unit, what a new one of similar size would mean for your kitchen or laundry closet, and whether another tradesperson is the better call. When an outlet or circuit is at fault, that job goes to an electrician; anything inside the appliance itself is ours.

Common questions

Which brands do you work on?

Most household brands sold around here: Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, GE, Frigidaire, Electrolux, LG, Bosch, Thermador, Miele, Speed Queen and Sub-Zero, among others. Age matters more than the badge. If a part is no longer made for an older model, we tell you during the diagnosis instead of promising a repair we can't finish.

Can you look at a second appliance on the same trip?

Yes. Mention it when you book, or tick the second-appliance box on the form, and the diagnostic for that one comes down by $10. Your technician checks both, writes a separate estimate for each, and you decide on them independently. A washer and its matching dryer, or a range and the dishwasher beside it, are common pairings.

What happens if my refrigerator needs a compressor?

A new compressor, a refrigerant leak or a recharge all count as sealed-system work, which we don't do. If testing shows the problem is there, you hear it right away, and the $95 visit is the only charge. We also give you a sense of whether a sealed-system repair is worth pursuing on a fridge of that age, or whether replacement makes more sense.

What if the fault is in the outlet or the house wiring?

We test the outlet, the breaker and the supply as part of every diagnosis. If the appliance is fine and the circuit is not, we show you what we measured and recommend an electrician, because wiring beyond the appliance is outside our work. Anything inside the appliance, from the cord terminal inward, is ours to repair.
