Cloudy glasses in very soft water: etching, film or a dishwasher fault
Etching or film? How very soft Everett water around Lynnwood clouds dishwasher glasses, a vinegar test to tell them apart, and when the machine is at fault.
Dishwashers · built-in and compact
Dishwashers that won't drain, fill, latch, dry or clean, in houses, condos and apartments across eleven towns. We sort mechanical faults from soft-water problems, write the price down, and repair only what you approve.

Very few places have water as soft as ours. The Everett supply, drawn from Spada Reservoir on the Sultan River and filtered at Chaplain Reservoir, serves about three-quarters of Snohomish County's homes and businesses and carries only about 10 to 16 parts per million of hardness. Everett adds soda ash to lift the pH and protect pipes. The King County towns on Seattle's Tolt supply sit around 1.2 to 1.4 grains per gallon. Soft water is kind to heating elements and valves, but it changes how detergent behaves. A dose meant for hard water etches glasses into a permanent haze, makes suds that seep out at the door, and leaves residue in the filter that slows the drain. Etching builds slowly, so it tends to surface long after a new dishwasher goes in, and the machine takes the blame. Before we replace anything, we look at what goes into the dispenser and how much of it.
One local exception is worth knowing. Part of Lake Forest Park draws groundwater from the Lake Forest Park Water District, whose hardness we haven't seen published, and groundwater usually carries more minerals than our surface supplies. If your glasses come out with a white, chalky film that soaks off in vinegar rather than a haze that stays, tell us; that points to minerals rather than etching, and the fix is different. The kitchens themselves vary widely too, from 1960s and 70s houses in Lynnwood and Edmonds where the dishwasher was added in a later remodel, to compact 18-inch units in Lynnwood City Center apartments, to integrated panel-front models in Woodway and Mill Creek. Power events show up here as well. After the November 2024 windstorm, dishwashers across SnoPUD, Seattle City Light and PSE territory came back with dead touch panels or stuck error lights; some needed nothing more than a reset at the breaker, and others needed a board.

Likely causeClogged filter, blocked air gap or disposal inlet, kinked hose, or a failed drain pump
What we doClean the filter and sump, clear the drain path, test the pump and replace it if it's failed
What you seePermanent haze on glasses
Likely causeEtching from detergent overdosing in very soft water
What we doConfirm with a vinegar test, reset detergent and rinse aid, check the fill temperature
What you seeDoesn't fill, or fills weakly
Likely causeInlet valve, a stuck float switch, or a half-closed supply valve
What we doTest the valve coil and the float, measure the fill volume, open the supply fully, and replace what failed
What you seeLeaks onto the floor
Likely causeDoor gasket, latch, a loose drain or fill connection, or suds
What we doFind the source, replace the gasket or fitting, check that the unit sits level
What you seeDishes stay wet
Likely causeHeating element, high-limit thermostat, vent or empty rinse aid
What we doTest the element and thermostat, replace the failed part, refill the rinse aid
What you seeDead panel or flashing lights
Likely causeDoor latch switch, thermal fuse or control board
What we doRead the error codes, test latch and fuse, replace the board if testing points to it
We start by running the dishwasher in its service or test mode where it has one, which cycles each part in turn: fill, wash motor, heater, drain. That shows quickly whether water is coming in, being heated and pumped out. Then the filter, spray arms and sump get inspected, because a large share of won't-clean complaints end right there. Valves, pumps, heaters and latches are tested with a meter before they're replaced, and the drain path is followed under the sink to the air gap or disposal. Inlet valves, drain pumps, door latches, heaters, gaskets and the common boards come with us, so many repairs end on the first visit. Spray arms get a close look as well, since one cracked arm or a few clogged jets on the upper arm explain a lot of dirty top racks. We also feel the water at the kitchen tap, because a dishwasher fed lukewarm water from a distant water heater cleans and dries poorly no matter what parts it has. When the dishwasher has to come out of the cabinet, we disconnect it, pull it, set it back level and check every connection before you load it again.
We work on Bosch, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, GE, Café, Miele, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, Electrolux, Thermador, Fisher & Paykel drawer models and Kenmore-label dishwashers, in standard 24-inch and compact 18-inch widths. Drawer models carry their own seals and motors in each drawer, so we test each drawer separately. We don't repair countertop dishwashers, which fall under small countertop appliances, or commercial dishwashers. Wiring outside the dishwasher is not ours either: we test the circuit and tell you when the fault is in the house and needs an electrician. Townhomes near the light-rail stations in Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace and Shoreline tend to have newer, quieter models with electronic sensors, and those get the same testing as older mechanical machines. Rentals near Edmonds College and in the City Center apartment blocks often need the landlord's sign-off first, and we can send the estimate their way.
Dishwasher repairs start from $249, and the price table lists the common jobs from latch through control board. Starting prices aren't a quote for your machine. The written estimate after the $95 diagnostic is, and nothing goes ahead until you approve it, at which point the diagnostic is credited to the repair. If the trouble turns out to be detergent dosing or a clogged filter, we show you, and the diagnostic is all you pay. Seniors 65+, veterans and active-duty military households take up to $18 off an approved repair.

Less than the packaging suggests. With water this soft, a full pod or a filled cup is often more than an ordinary load needs. Try a smaller amount of powder or gel, keep the rinse aid topped up, and watch the glasses over a few weeks. If the haze stops spreading, you've found the right dose. Pods can't be split, so consider switching for everyday loads.
Not for long. A small leak at the door can be suds or a worn gasket, but water under the unit can soak the subfloor or cabinet base without showing. Shut the supply valve under the sink if the leak is steady, wipe up what you can see, and book a visit. In condos a leak can reach the unit below, so act quickly.
Food and grease trapped in the filter, sump or drain hose. Most newer dishwashers have a manual filter that needs rinsing regularly; many older ones grind food instead. Clean the filter, run a hot empty cycle, and check that the drain hose loops high under the sink so dirty water doesn't drift back. If the smell persists, the drain path may be partly blocked, which we can clear.
Usually that the drain pump is trying to run against a blockage or has failed. Check the filter first, and look under the sink for a kinked hose. If the dishwasher was recently connected to a new disposal, the disposal's knockout plug may still be in place. If none of that clears it, the pump needs testing, and it is a part we carry.
Yes. Name both when you book, and the second appliance's diagnostic is $10 lower. Your technician checks each one and writes a separate estimate for each, so you can approve one repair and hold off on the other if you prefer.
