Cloudy glasses in very soft water: etching, film or a dishwasher fault
Etching or film? How very soft Everett water around Lynnwood clouds dishwasher glasses, a vinegar test to tell them apart, and when the machine is at fault.
Dishwashers · Lynnwood
Lynnwood's water is so soft that most dishwasher trouble here starts at the detergent cup, not with mineral scale. We fix drains, pumps, latches and leaks, and we show you how to dose for Everett water.

When a dishwasher in Lynnwood leaves glasses cloudy, the natural guess is hard water. Here it is almost always the reverse. The city buys Everett's water from Spada Reservoir through the Alderwood district, and its 2025 water-quality report puts hardness at 10.2 to 15.8 parts per million. Water that soft dissolves detergent quickly and leaves the surplus with nothing to work on but the glassware itself. Over months that shows up as etching: a milky haze or a rainbow sheen that no rinse aid, vinegar soak or scrubbing will remove, because the surface of the glass has been changed. Plates and pots rarely show it; glassware does.
The other half of our Lynnwood dishwasher work is about where the machine lives. Nearly half the city lives in multi-unit buildings, so a slow drip under a third-floor dishwasher becomes a stain on a second-floor ceiling. In the older split-levels, the challenge is age around the machine rather than in it: a disposer added years later, older drain connections, and a shutoff valve under the sink that nobody has turned in a long time.

What we doRinse out the suds, check the door gasket and help you reset your dose
What you seeGlasses cloudy, and the film will not wipe off
Likely causeEtching from excess detergent in soft water
What we doConfirm etching rather than residue, set the dose and rinse aid, check water heating
What you seeWater standing in the tub after the cycle
Likely causeClogged filter, a kinked drain hose or a jammed drain pump
What we doClear the filter and pump, check the hose loop and the disposer connection
What you seeBosch showing E24 or E25
Likely causeDrain hose blocked, or the drain pump cover jammed with debris
What we doClear the hose and pump cover, and replace the pump if its impeller is damaged
What you seeHums but never fills
Likely causeFailed inlet valve, a stuck float switch or a supply valve barely open
What we doTest the valve and float, then confirm the supply under the sink
What you seeDishes come out wet
Likely causeRinse aid empty, heater failed or the vent not opening
What we doCheck the rinse aid, test the heating circuit and the vent mechanism
Everett adds soda ash to its water to raise the pH for corrosion control, and Lynnwood's supply reaches the tap carrying very little calcium. That is good news for heating elements and spray arms, which rarely scale up here. It is bad news for anyone dosing as if the water were hard. Our advice: fill the main cup only partway rather than to the line, skip the prewash cup unless the dishes are heavily soiled, and keep the rinse aid topped up. Pods hold a fixed dose, which is often too much for a half load. Etching that has already happened is permanent, but stopping the overdose keeps it from spreading to the rest of your glasses.
In City Center and North Lynnwood buildings, the first sign of a dishwasher problem is sometimes a call from a downstairs neighbor. We look for the source at the door gasket, the tub seams, the inlet valve and the drain hose clamp, and we check the leak-detection float on models that have one. Building managers often want the cause in writing, and the written estimate notes what we found and where the water came from. If water is actively reaching the unit below, shut the supply valve under the sink and switch off the dishwasher's breaker before we arrive.
In older Meadowdale and Lynndale kitchens, the dishwasher shares its sink cabinet with a disposer, a hot-water line and a shutoff valve that may be decades old. A new disposer installed without knocking out its dishwasher inlet plug will stop a dishwasher draining on its very first cycle, so we check that early. If the shutoff under the sink is seized or weeping, we point it out before starting, since forcing it can make things worse. The disposer and the dishwasher usually share one drain, too, so a sluggish disposer can push dirty water back into the tub; running the disposer briefly before starting the dishwasher is a good habit in these kitchens.
Dishwasher repair here starts from $249 for jobs such as an inlet valve, a door latch, a heater, a drain pump or a control board. Treat that figure as the doorway to the category; it says nothing yet about your particular machine. The exact price is written down after the $95 diagnostic, which then counts toward the repair if you go ahead. If all your dishwasher needs is a different detergent habit, we tell you so, and you pay for the diagnostic alone.

Pumps, valves, latches, heaters and gaskets are moderate repairs, and on a dishwasher with a sound tub and racks they are nearly always the better choice. Replacement makes more sense when the tub itself leaks, when rust has eaten through the door liner, or when a machine that already had one major part needs a control board as well. Etching does not count against the machine; it is a dosing problem, and a new dishwasher fed the same detergent will haze your glasses just as fast. For owners of City Center apartments, a standard 24-inch replacement fits most openings, so the choice is mainly about the age of the unit. In older Lynnwood houses, check the opening before shopping, since some kitchens were cut around models that sit lower or narrower than current ones. We give you the written estimate and an opinion, and you decide.
No, and it could make things worse. Lynnwood's water already averages close to 0.7 grains of hardness per gallon, which is very soft. Softening it further would leave even more surplus detergent to attack your glassware. If your dishwasher has a built-in softener or a water-hardness setting, as many Bosch and Miele models do, set it to the softest level and skip the dishwasher salt.
You can, but on soft water a pod is often more detergent than a normal load needs, and far more than a half load needs. If glasses come out hazy or there is foam at the door, switch to powder or gel and fill the cup partway. If you prefer pods, run them only with full loads and keep the rinse aid dispenser filled.
If it leaks, smells of burning, trips the breaker or leaves standing water, stop using it. Turn off the breaker and close the supply valve under the sink if water is escaping. A dishwasher that simply cleans poorly or leaves a film can usually keep running until your technician arrives, though fixing your dose in the meantime may solve the problem on its own.
Open the door and look along the edge of the tub, on the side or top rim, or on the inside edge of the door itself. It is printed on a small label or plate. Read it to us when you call, or enter it in the model field of the online form, and your technician can check likely parts before the visit and often bring them along.
Close the supply valve under your sink, turn off the dishwasher's breaker and lay towels down. Let your building manager or the neighbor know so they can protect their ceiling. Then book a visit and tell us the water reached another unit, so we can prioritize it. We find the source and write down the cause, which helps with any conversation about damage afterward.
