Cloudy glasses in very soft water: etching, film or a dishwasher fault
Etching or film? How very soft Everett water around Lynnwood clouds dishwasher glasses, a vinegar test to tell them apart, and when the machine is at fault.
Dishwashers · Edmonds & Esperance
Edmonds water is so soft that the detergent dose on the box is usually too much, and that shows up as etched glass and foam before it shows up as a broken part. We sort out which one you have, then repair it.

Dishwashers in Edmonds wear out in the usual ways, with drain pumps, inlet valves, door latches and heaters failing as they would anywhere. What sets this city apart is the water. The City of Edmonds buys Everett’s Spada Lake supply through the Alderwood district at an average of 12.5 ppm, and a few south-end streets may draw Seattle water from the Olympic View district, which is also soft. Detergents are formulated for harder water than either, so many kitchens here are slowly etching their glassware without knowing it.
Your technician starts by separating chemistry from mechanics. Cloudy glass that will not wipe clean, foam on the floor and a film on plastics often trace back to dose and rinse aid, not to the machine. Standing water, a dead control panel, a door that will not latch or a leak at the base are mechanical, and those we repair in place. Most visits start with a few questions about which detergent you use and how much, because the answer changes the diagnosis. We work on Bosch, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, GE, Miele and panel-ready Thermador units, among others.

Likely causeClogged filter, blocked air gap or a weak drain pump
What we doClean the filter and air gap; test the pump and replace it if needed

What we doCheck the breaker and supply, test the switch, then the board
What you seeDishes come out cold and wet

Etching is the issue we explain most often in Edmonds. In water this soft, a full detergent dose has almost no minerals to work on, so the excess attacks the glass itself, leaving a rainbow sheen or milky haze that never comes off. It is permanent on the glassware already affected, but it stops when the dose drops. For most machines here, half the recommended amount of powder or gel is plenty, and pods are better saved for full, heavily soiled loads. Short eco cycles make etching worse, since the same detergent goes into less water. Set rinse aid low. If your dishwasher has a built-in water softener, as some European models do, set it to the softest level or switch it off.
Power is the second Edmonds pattern. The bomb cyclone of November 19 and 20, 2024 left upward of 70,000 PUD accounts without electricity, and dishwashers with electronic controls do not always come back cleanly from an outage or the surge that can follow restoration. A dead panel after a storm can be a tripped GFCI at the sink, a breaker, a failed door switch or a damaged board. We test them in that order, since the cheaper causes are common. Storms aside, some 1960s kitchens in Five Corners and Westgate still share one circuit between the dishwasher and the disposer; if the breaker trips when both run, that circuit is an electrician’s call, not a dishwasher fault.
Many apartments along Highway 99, and near Edmonds College just over the line in Lynnwood, are rentals, and the dishwasher usually belongs to the owner. You are welcome to book the visit as a tenant. Let us know who approves the repair; your technician writes the estimate, and nothing starts until that person agrees to it. Owners who manage several units often ask us to list the model and serial on the estimate for their records, and we are glad to. If the machine came with the unit, the owner may know its install date, which helps us judge whether a repair makes sense.
Dishwasher repair starts at $249, and pumps and control boards land higher on the list. A starting figure only tells you where the category begins, so do not read it as your price; that comes on the written estimate after the $95 diagnostic, and the diagnostic is folded into the repair once you approve it. When etching turns out to be the whole problem, the diagnostic is all you pay. Seniors 65+, veterans and active-duty military households can tick the box for up to $18 off a repair.

A dishwasher under about ten years old with a failed pump, valve, latch or heater is almost always worth repairing. Control boards are the closer call. On a budget model past eight or nine years, a new board can come near the cost of a basic replacement, while on a Bosch, Miele or panel-ready unit with a custom wood front, the board is still the cheaper path by a wide margin, and the cabinetry stays untouched. Tub cracks and rusted-through racks usually mean replacement. In older Edmonds kitchens there is one more factor: a 1960s cabinet opening may have been adapted for the current machine, and a new model may need its own adjustments to fit. If you are replacing only because of etched glasses, wait; a new dishwasher fed the same dose will etch just as fast.
Put one cloudy glass in a bowl of white vinegar for five minutes or so. If it comes out clear, the film was mineral, and rinse aid or a cleaning cycle will handle it. If it stays cloudy, the glass is etched, which in Edmonds water is the usual result of too much detergent. Etching cannot be reversed, but cutting the dose stops it from getting worse.
We check both ends. A clogged disposer inlet or a sink drain blockage pushes water back into the dishwasher, and clearing the disposer side, or the air gap on the counter, often fixes it. If the blockage sits deeper in the house drain, that is a plumbing job and we will say so. If the dishwasher’s own pump or check valve is the fault, we replace it.
Better not. Turn the dishwasher off at its switch or breaker, close the supply valve under the sink, and wipe up the water so it does not reach the subfloor. Small leaks under a dishwasher spread quietly, and in a condo they can reach the unit below. Book a visit and mention where the water appears; that helps us bring the right gasket or valve.
Usually. A heavy wood front needs hinge springs and cables matched to its weight, and when one stretches or snaps, the door falls instead of easing down. We replace the worn springs or cables in pairs, check the hinge arms and balance the door so it rests at the loading angle. Most of that work is done with the custom panel left in place.
Food trapped in the filter and moisture held in a closed tub. Most current dishwashers have a removable filter under the lower spray arm; rinse it every week or two. Leave the door cracked after a cycle, especially through the damp Edmonds winter, and run the garbage disposer before starting the dishwasher if the two share a drain. A smell that persists after that can point to a drain fault worth checking.
