Cloudy glasses in very soft water: etching, film or a dishwasher fault
Etching or film? How very soft Everett water around Lynnwood clouds dishwasher glasses, a vinegar test to tell them apart, and when the machine is at fault.

Kenmore dishwasher trouble has a short list of causes, and soft Tolt water adds a couple of its own, cloudy glasses chief among them. We find which one you have, price it in writing and fix it, often on the first visit.

Kenmore's water is Tolt River supply delivered by the Northshore Utility District, and it is soft: about 1.2 to 1.4 grains per gallon by SPU's early-2026 readings. Soft water and a heaping scoop of detergent are a rough combination for glassware. With few minerals in the water to bind to, the detergent goes to work on the glass itself, leaving a haze that no rinse aid removes. A fair number of the dishwashers we're called to in town are working fine, and the cure is a smaller dose, not a new pump. Rinse aid helps water sheet off the glass, but it can't undo etching that has already set in. If you aren't sure which one you're looking at, the vinegar test in the questions below sorts it out.
The mechanical failures are familiar ones. Filters clog, drain pumps jam on a shard of glass or a bone, inlet valves stop opening, latches wear, and heating elements fail so dishes come out wet. Kenmore-label dishwashers with a 665 prefix are Whirlpool-built, and we carry the pumps, valves and latches those machines use most. Bosch, KitchenAid, GE and Miele units turn up in the town's remodeled kitchens too, and we work on all of them.
What you seeA pool of water under the lower rack
Likely causeClogged filter, kinked drain hose, a disposal knockout never removed, or a failed drain pump
What we doClear the filter and sump, check the hose route and disposal inlet, then test the pump and replace it if needed
What you seeGlasses cloudy, film won't wipe off
Likely causeDetergent overdose etching the glass in soft Tolt water
What we doConfirm it's etching rather than mineral film, adjust dose and rinse aid, check water temperature
What you seeTop rack comes out dirty
Likely causeClogged upper spray arm or low fill from a weak inlet valve
What we doClean arms and screens, measure the fill, replace the valve if it runs short
What you seeLeak at the front of the door
Likely causeWorn door gasket, failed latch, or suds spilling over the tub
What we doReplace the gasket or latch, cut the suds, check that the tub sits level
What you seeDishes wet at the end of the cycle
Likely causeHeater burned out, its thermostat open, or the rinse aid dispenser dry
What we doMeter the element and thermostat, replace what failed
What you seeWon't start, lights blinking
Likely causeDoor latch switch or control board
What we doRead the error, test the latch and board, replace the one at fault
Inglewood and Uplake Terrace were platted in the early 1950s, and few of their kitchens started out with a dishwasher. The ones added later went wherever they fit, usually beside the sink, draining into a disposal and fed by a supply line teed off the hot-water pipe. That arrangement works, but it gives us two extra places to look when a dishwasher won't drain: the high loop of the drain hose under the sink, and the disposal's inlet, which clogs or was never knocked out when a new disposal went in. Older supply valves under these sinks can also seize half-closed, starving the dishwasher of water, so we check flow there before blaming the inlet valve.
In the downtown buildings off Bothell Way, compact 24-inch and 18-inch dishwashers are common, often boxed tightly into the cabinetry. A leak there can travel under the cabinets toward a neighbor's ceiling before anyone notices. When a condo dishwasher leaves a damp spot, we pull it out, find the source, and check the hose connections and the floor beneath before sliding it back. Let us know your unit number and parking details when you book so the visit starts on time.
The 1980s and 90s subdivisions that hold about a third of Kenmore's homes are often on their second or third dishwasher in the same opening. Builder-grade units from that era used simple mechanical timers; their replacements run on electronic boards and sensors, which are more efficient but more sensitive to a bad connection at the junction box. When one of these shows random faults, we check the wiring connection at the unit and the circuit it shares before replacing any electronics. Those later machines also count on a hot first fill, so running the kitchen tap until it turns hot before you start a cycle helps them clean and dry, especially where the water heater sits at the far end of a long house.
Dishwasher repairs begin at $249, and the table shows the usual jobs from latch to control board. Read that as where prices start; your own price is set by the written estimate after the $95 diagnostic. If we find etching or a clogged filter instead of a failed part, you hear that first, and the diagnostic may be the whole bill. Approve a repair and the diagnostic is credited toward it. Have the refrigerator looked at on the same trip and that second diagnostic is $10 lower.

Pumps, valves, latches, heaters and gaskets are reasonable repairs on most dishwashers, and they make up most of what we replace in Kenmore. A new machine starts to make more sense when the tub itself has cracked and leaks, when rust has worked through the inner door panel, or when an older model needs a control board priced close to a new dishwasher. In the town's remodeled 1950s kitchens the opening is sometimes a little off standard, which can make keeping the current unit more attractive than hunting for a replacement that fits the gap. In downtown condos and rentals, the lease or the building's rules may settle the question for you. Either way, your technician prices the repair, mentions anything else worth knowing, and leaves the choice to you.
Usually because the water is soft and the detergent dose is high, which etches glass over time. Try this: leave one hazy glass in a bowl of white vinegar for several minutes. If it clears, the film is mineral and a rinse aid or cleaner will help. If it stays cloudy, it is etching, which is permanent; cutting the detergent dose keeps it from getting worse.
New disposals come with a knockout plug inside the dishwasher inlet, and it has to be punched out before the dishwasher hose is connected. If it was missed, the dishwasher pumps against a sealed port and water stays in the tub. We check that inlet, the drain hose's high loop and the pump, and fix whichever is blocking the water.
Yes. Compact 18-inch and standard 24-inch built-in dishwashers are both household machines we repair, including the tightly fitted units in Kenmore's downtown condos. Parts for compact models are sometimes ordered rather than carried, which can mean a second visit; reading the model number to us when you book helps us bring the right ones the first time.
No. Countertop dishwashers belong with small countertop appliances, which we don't repair. We handle built-in dishwashers, including drawer-style models and compact units. If you are unsure which kind you have, describe how it connects to water: a model that hooks to the kitchen faucet is a countertop unit, while one plumbed under the sink is built-in.
The tag usually sits on the edge of the door or the side of the tub, visible when the door is open. Read the model and serial numbers to us on the phone, or type them into the booking form along with any error code on the display. That way the most likely parts for your machine come along with your technician.
