Cloudy glasses in very soft water: etching, film or a dishwasher fault
Etching or film? How very soft Everett water around Lynnwood clouds dishwasher glasses, a vinegar test to tell them apart, and when the machine is at fault.
Shoreline · Dishwashers
Cloudy glasses that never come clean, water sitting in the tub, a stain spreading on the basement ceiling: these are Shoreline dishwasher calls. We find the cause, write the price down and fix most of them in one visit.

Seattle's Tolt water arrives in Shoreline with very little mineral in it, around 1.2 to 1.4 grains per gallon. Detergent is formulated to spend part of its strength binding hard-water minerals, and when there are almost none to bind, a full scoop goes to work on the dishes instead. Over months that shows up as glassware that looks permanently foggy, sometimes with a faint rainbow sheen, while the spray arms and filter stay perfectly clean. That is etching, it does not wash off, and no part we install will reverse it. We would rather explain it on the first visit than sell you a pump you don't need.
The rest of our Shoreline dishwasher work is mechanical. Drain pumps jam on glass chips and fruit labels, inlet valves stick, door latches stop reporting closed, heating elements fail, and float switches in the base trip when a slow leak fills the pan. We repair built-in dishwashers of every common brand, check the water supply, drain connection and electrical feed, and put the price in writing before we start.

Every Shoreline tap runs on the same soft water, even though two utilities deliver it. Seattle Public Utilities serves the part of the city generally west of I-5, about 58 percent of residents, and North City Water District serves the east side with water it buys from Seattle. Pods and pre-measured tabs are sized for harder water than either delivers. If your glasses have started to fog, switch to a smaller measured amount of powder or gel, keep the rinse-aid dispenser filled, and stop pre-rinsing, which leaves the enzymes in the detergent nothing to work on but the glass.
Many of the city's post-war kitchens were not planned around a dishwasher. The one in place today is often the second or third to occupy a base cabinet beside the sink, fed by a supply line teed off the hot pipe and drained through the disposal or a sink tailpiece. In houses with a basement under the kitchen, the first sign of a leak is usually a ring on the ceiling below rather than a puddle on the kitchen floor. When we see one, we pull the kick plate, run a short cycle with the panel off and trace the drip to its source: the inlet valve, the supply fitting, the drain hose clamp or a pump seal.
Newer townhomes near the 148th and 185th stations have the opposite issue. Their dishwashers are quiet, sensor-heavy machines that halt the cycle at the first hint of trouble, and a few spoonfuls of water in the base pan will stop one cold with a leak code. Read that code to us when you call, or type it into the booking form along with the model number. It often tells your technician which part to bring, and that makes the first visit more likely to be the last.
Dishwasher repairs start at $249, and the price table on this page compares valves, latches, heaters, pumps and boards. Please read that number as a starting point rather than a quote. The exact price comes in the written estimate your technician prepares after the diagnostic, and the $95 diagnostic is credited toward the repair if you go ahead with it.

A dishwasher's tub and racks usually outlast the parts bolted to them, so pumps, valves, latches and heaters are almost always worth replacing. In Shoreline we also weigh the kitchen. If the cabinet opening in a post-war house was built narrow or shallow, or the original counter has been replaced with stone that leaves nothing to screw mounting brackets into, swapping in a new machine can turn into a small carpentry job. On the other side of the ledger, a rusted tub, a failed main board on an entry-level model, or racks that are flaking and rusting usually make a new dishwasher the better value. Etched glassware is not a reason to buy a new machine, because a new one fed the same dose will etch the same way. We put the repair price on paper and give you our plain read before you decide.
If the cloudiness is etching, no. Etching is damage to the glass surface from detergent in soft water, and it is permanent. What a visit can do is rule out a failed heater, a weak fill or a blocked spray arm, which cause residue that does wash off. From there, the fix for etching is a smaller dose and rinse aid, not a part.
For the dishwasher, no. Shoreline's Tolt water is already soft, and softening it further makes detergent even more aggressive on glass. Some dishwashers have a built-in softener or a hardness setting; on Shoreline water it should be set to the softest level or switched off. Your technician can find the setting on your model during a visit.
Open the door and look along the edges of the tub opening: the label is usually on the left or right side, or along the top edge of the door. Read the model and serial number to us on the phone, or type them into the booking form. With those, we can check common failures for your model and bring the likely part.
Usually, though it may be a small one. The float switch in the base pan trips with very little water, and the source can be a loose fitting, a door seal, a cracked hose or simply oversudsing that pushed foam past the door. We find where the water came from before replacing anything, because resetting the switch without fixing the cause only buys a few cycles.
Yes. Tell us about the second appliance when you book, or tick the box in the online form, and your technician will plan time for both. The second diagnostic on the same visit is $10 less, and each repair gets its own written estimate, so you can approve one, both or neither.
