A refrigerator that loses its cold is the appliance call that can't sit until next week, so fans, defrost parts, start relays and water valves stay stocked in the vehicle, and same-day visits run Monday through Saturday. Our area stretches from Silver Lake and Mariner in south Everett down through Lynnwood, Edmonds and Mountlake Terrace to Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore and Bothell. The kitchens vary as much as the towns: Lynnwood, where fewer than half of homes are detached houses and the fridge often came with the apartment; Mill Creek's 1980s-and-later subdivisions full of French-door models; and panel-front built-ins in Edmonds and Woodway view homes. Older houses add their own patterns. Mountlake Terrace and Lynnwood grew fast from the 1950s through the 70s, and many of those kitchens have been through several refrigerators in the same alcove, each a little larger than the last, with less room behind it for warm air to escape.

Weather drives a good deal of refrigerator work here. During the November 2024 bomb cyclone, more than 70,000 Snohomish County PUD customers lost power, along with about 43,000 on Seattle City Light, which serves Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, and over 400,000 on PSE. Three summers earlier, the June 2021 heat dome set Sea-Tac's all-time record of 108°F, while Lynnwood reported an unofficial 109°F. Outages strain control boards and freeze defrost drains shut; heat waves find every weak condenser fan, especially in a garage. If your refrigerator sat dark for a day or more during that storm, a slow leak or an erratic display since then is worth mentioning when you call. A fridge that has run warm for a stretch also deserves a look at its door gaskets, because a gap there makes every other part work harder.

Refrigerator symptoms, causes and repairs

  1. What you seeFresh-food shelves warming, freezer section fine

Likely causeEvaporator fan, defrost heater, defrost sensor, or a defrost timer or board

What we doTake down the rear freezer panel, read the frost on the coil, meter the defrost circuit and the fan

  2. What you seeEverything warm, compressor clicks on and off

Likely causeStart relay or overload; less often the compressor itself

What we doMeter the relay first and then the compressor; a bad relay gets replaced, a failed compressor gets reported on the spot

  3. What you seeFrost building in the freezer, door hard to shut

Likely causeTorn gasket or a sagging door letting damp air in

What we doReplace the gasket, adjust hinges and leveling so the door seals, and check the door switch that runs the fan

  4. What you seePuddle inside or under the unit

Likely causeFrozen defrost drain, cracked drain pan or a leaking water line

What we doClear the drain, fix the pan or line, then find out why the drain froze

  5. What you seeRattle or buzz from the back

Likely causeCondenser fan blade striking debris, a failing fan motor, or a loose drain pan

What we doClean the compartment and coils, replace the fan motor if it drags, and secure the pan so it stops rattling

  6. What you seeTemperatures drift, display shows errors

Likely causeThermistor out of range or a failing main control board

What we doRead the codes, test the sensors, replace the sensor or the board

How we diagnose and repair refrigerators

Your technician begins with what you can't see from the kitchen: voltage at the outlet, the breaker, the real temperature in each compartment and the sound of each fan. Then the panels come off. Frost on the evaporator coil tells a story. A coil buried in a solid white block points to the defrost system, while a lightly frosted coil beside a silent fan points to the fan motor. Each suspect part gets metered before it is replaced, so you never pay for a guess. Common fans, defrost heaters and sensors, start relays, inlet valves and the more frequent control boards travel with us, which lets most repairs finish on the first visit; a built-in's part or a less common board can mean a second trip once it arrives. Before we leave, we watch the unit cycle and confirm both compartments are heading toward their set temperatures. For a unit in the garage we also look at its surroundings, since a refrigerator-freezer parked in a cold space can let the freezer soften while the fresh-food thermostat reports that all is well.

We work on Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, JennAir, GE, GE Profile and Café, Frigidaire and Electrolux, LG, Bosch, Fisher & Paykel, Sub-Zero, Thermador, Miele and the many Kenmore-label models those makers built. What we don't take on is sealed-system work: compressor replacement, refrigerant leak repair and recharging. Commercial refrigeration is also outside what we do, so reach-in coolers and display cases from a store or restaurant aren't ours. When the diagnostic points to the sealed system, you hear it immediately, with the readings that show it, and we help you weigh keeping the refrigerator against replacing it. And if the trouble is a dead outlet or a breaker that trips the moment the compressor starts, we tell you the fix belongs to an electrician rather than to the appliance. Water dispensers and door ice makers are part of the same visit; our ice maker page goes into those in more detail.

Refrigerator repair prices

Refrigerator repairs begin at $259, and the price table below runs from start relay to control board. Those figures mark where each job starts rather than quoting yours; your price arrives on the written estimate after the $95 diagnostic, and nothing proceeds until you approve it. Once you do, the diagnostic is credited toward the repair. A second appliance checked on the same visit gets $10 off its own diagnostic, and seniors 65+, veterans and active-duty military households can take up to $18 off the repair. No town in our area is priced higher than another.

Repair tips

Common questions

Do you repair built-in refrigerators like Sub-Zero?

Yes. Built-in and panel-ready refrigerators from Sub-Zero, Thermador, Monogram, Bosch, Miele, Fisher & Paykel and others are household units we repair, from condenser and evaporator fans to valves, defrost parts and boards. Their parts usually have to be ordered, so reading us the model and serial numbers when you book saves time. Sealed-system faults on built-ins are outside our work, as they are on any refrigerator.

What does sealed system mean, and why don't you do it?

The sealed system is the compressor, condenser, evaporator and the refrigerant circulating through them. Opening it calls for refrigerant recovery and recharging equipment and is a separate trade from the fan, defrost, valve and control work we focus on, so we don't take it on. We still test the parts around it, because a failed start relay or condenser fan can pass for a dead compressor at a fraction of the repair bill.

Can a power outage damage my refrigerator?

It can, though rarely in the way people expect. Losing power seldom hurts a refrigerator; the surge when power returns can damage a control board. Long outages also let freezer ice melt and refreeze, which can seal a defrost drain and send water onto the floor days later. If your refrigerator has acted strangely since a storm, tell us when you book.

Do you charge more for towns farther from Lynnwood?

No. From Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace and Brier out to Mukilteo, Mill Creek, south Everett, Bothell, Kenmore, Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, the diagnostic and the repair prices stay the same, with no surcharge for distance. Drive times from central Lynnwood run from a few minutes to about 26 off-peak, and same-day visits are most dependable when you reach us in the morning.

The fridge came with my apartment. How does approval work?

Whoever is responsible for the appliance approves the estimate, and then we do the work. In many rentals, including the apartments around Edmonds College, that is the landlord or the property manager. We can hand the written estimate to whoever signs off, and the repair goes ahead once they approve it. If the fridge is yours, the decision is simply yours.
