Edmonds refrigerators, from view-home built-ins to garage freezers

A fridge that warms up in Edmonds is often a built-in with a dusty top condenser, or an older unit retired to a garage in Perrinville or Five Corners. We diagnose both in your home, roughly 10 to 16 minutes from Lynnwood.

Edmonds refrigerators come in two very different populations. In the Bowl, along the Seaview streets and up into Woodway, remodeled kitchens hold built-in and panel-ready columns from Sub-Zero, Thermador, Monogram and KitchenAid, set flush into cabinetry with the condenser and fans behind a grille at the top. Elsewhere, especially in the 1960s houses around Five Corners, Perrinville and Westgate, the kitchen fridge is a standard French-door or side-by-side, and there is often an older top-freezer or upright freezer working out in the garage.

Both kinds fail in familiar ways, and nearly all of those failures can be repaired where the unit stands: fans, defrost components, start relays, water valves, door gaskets and control boards. Your technician checks the cooling, the airflow and the defrost system before naming a cause, and puts the price in writing before any work starts. The one area we leave alone is the sealed system. If the compressor has failed or refrigerant is leaking, we tell you during the visit and help you think through replacement rather than sending you a second bill later.

Refrigerator problems in Edmonds kitchens and garages

Likely causeTop-mounted condenser coil matted with dust, or its fan slowing

What we doClean the coil, test the condenser fan motor and replace it if it drags

  2. What you seeFreezer fine, refrigerator section warming over a day or two

What we doTest the defrost circuit and replace the failed heater, sensor or board

Likely causeSingle-thermostat design idles when the garage nears freezing

What we doConfirm the cause, advise on placement, rule out a failed relay

  4. What you seeClicking every few minutes, compressor never starts

Likely causeFailed start relay or overload, occasionally a compressor fault

What we doReplace the relay; if the compressor itself is dead, we say so

  5. What you seeWater pooling under the crisper drawers

What we doThaw and clear the drain, then fix whatever made it freeze

What we doVerify voltage at the outlet, then test and replace the board

Built-ins, garages and storm outages in Edmonds

Built-in refrigerators are common in Edmonds view homes, and they behave differently from freestanding models. Because the compressor and condenser sit on top behind a louvered grille, they pull in whatever dust rises through the kitchen. A coil left unbrushed for a few years can push a built-in into nonstop running, with the fresh-food side drifting warm while the freezer holds. We remove the grille, clean and test, and look at the fan and at the door gaskets, which on these heavy doors take real wear along the hinge side. Panel-ready units need care around the custom fronts, and we protect the cabinetry while we work.

The garage refrigerator is the other Edmonds staple, especially in the hillside neighborhoods built in the 1960s, where a spare fridge or upright freezer often stands beside the car. Most standard models rely on a thermostat in the fresh-food compartment. When a cold January night chills the garage, that compartment never calls for cooling, the compressor stays off, and the freezer slowly warms. A garage that bakes in a heat wave, as during June 2021, overworks the condenser fan instead. Neither case is a broken refrigerator in the usual sense, and we will tell you when moving it, or choosing a garage-rated model, solves more than a part would. On built-ins the rating plate usually sits inside the fresh-food compartment near the top or behind the grille; reading the model and serial to us when you book lets us confirm part availability before the visit.

Then there is power. During the November 2024 bomb cyclone, Snohomish County PUD counted over 70,000 customers in the dark at once. Refrigerators that ran fine before the storm sometimes came back with a blank display, a fan that would not start or a board that kept resetting. We check the supply first, since a damaged outlet or a tripped GFCI is a quicker fix than any part, and replace a board only when testing points to it. After a long outage with a full freezer, also watch for water under the crisper drawers once cooling resumes; melted frost can overwhelm the defrost drain and refreeze into a plug.

What refrigerator repair costs in Edmonds

Refrigerator repairs start at $259 and climb with the job; board and defrost work sit higher in the table than a relay. That opening figure is a guide for the category, not a quote for your machine. Your exact number appears on the written estimate once the $95 diagnostic is done, and the diagnostic is credited toward the repair when you approve it. Woodway and Esperance pay the same as central Edmonds.

Fix it or replace it

Built-in refrigerators are expensive to replace and are designed to be repaired, so a failed fan, defrost part or control board on one is almost always worth fixing, even at fifteen years old. The calculation changes if the sealed system is the problem: a compressor or refrigerant leak means work we do not take on, and on most freestanding models that points to replacement anyway. For a standard French-door unit under about ten years old, a single-part repair usually makes sense. A garage fridge from the 1990s is different. If it needs anything beyond a relay or a fan, putting that money toward a newer garage-rated model often serves you better, and your technician will say so rather than sell a repair. In the 1960s kitchens of Five Corners and Westgate, also measure before you decide; many current refrigerators are deeper and taller than the original opening allows.

Common questions

The fresh-food side of our built-in is warm, but the freezer seems fine. What is likely?

On a built-in, the usual causes are a dirty top condenser, a slowing condenser fan, or a defrost fault that has iced the evaporator feeding the fresh-food side. A failed damper or evaporator fan is next. Check that the grille at the top is not blocked and the doors seal; then book a visit and read us the model and serial from the tag inside the door.

Will you work on the compressor or the refrigerant if that turns out to be the problem?

No. Sealed-system work is outside what we take on, so compressor replacement, leak repair and recharging go to a refrigeration specialist or lead to a new refrigerator. We test enough to tell you with confidence that the sealed system is at fault, which keeps you from paying for parts that would not help. On that visit, the $95 diagnostic is the whole bill.

My garage freezer in Perrinville quits every winter. Should I replace it?

Not necessarily. Many units sold for indoor kitchens are not designed to run where the air falls near freezing. An upright freezer with its own thermostat often copes; a combination fridge-freezer usually does not, because its control sits in the warmer compartment. We confirm no part has failed, then talk through placement, a garage-rated replacement or bringing the unit indoors through the coldest weeks.

What should I do with the food while I wait for the visit?

Keep the doors closed as much as you can; a full freezer holds its temperature for many hours on its own. Move the most perishable items to a cooler with ice if the fresh-food side passes 40°F. Do not chip at ice on the back wall with a knife. If you have a second refrigerator, consolidate. Calling in the morning makes a same-day visit, Monday through Saturday, far more likely.

Is a fridge that keeps tripping the garage GFCI something you fix?

We test the receptacle, the GFCI and the breaker during the diagnostic. If the refrigerator itself is leaking current, often through a defrost heater or a wet wire harness, that repair is ours. If the outlet or the circuit is at fault, which is common on older garage wiring in Edmonds, we tell you it needs an electrician and do not charge you for parts the refrigerator does not need.
