Cloudy glasses in very soft water: etching, film or a dishwasher fault
Etching or film? How very soft Everett water around Lynnwood clouds dishwasher glasses, a vinegar test to tell them apart, and when the machine is at fault.
Dishwashers · Mill Creek
Mill Creek's tap carries only about 12.5 ppm of hardness, so most dishwasher trouble here starts with too much detergent rather than scale. We repair pumps, valves, latches and heaters, and adjust the machine for the water you actually have.

Detergent makers aim their formulas at a typical American tap, and the water in Mill Creek is far from typical. With so little calcium to neutralize it, a full scoop or a large pod leaves surplus alkaline chemistry circulating in hot water, and over months that surplus works on the glass itself. The result is a cloudy, slightly rough haze that no rinse removes. There is an easy home test: soak one cloudy glass in white vinegar for five minutes. If it comes out clear, the haze was residue and better dosing will fix it. If it stays cloudy, the surface is etched, and the goal becomes protecting the rest of the cupboard.
The machines themselves fall into three groups here. Mill Creek East and the newer city subdivisions are full of builder dishwashers from Whirlpool, GE and Frigidaire, many now on their original pumps and valves. The remodeled kitchens of the first plat phases tend toward Bosch, KitchenAid and Miele, often panel-ready so the door matches the cabinets. The rentals around Town Center and East Gateway mostly have mid-range models chosen by the owner. We repair all three groups, and the common drain pumps, inlet valves and latches travel with your technician.

What we doConfirm the etching, lower the dose and rinse-aid setting, check water temperature
What you seeFoam seeping from the door onto the floor
Likely causeOverdosed or wrong detergent, sometimes hand dish soap
What we doClear the suds, inspect the door seal and drain, and reset the dose
What you seeStanding water in the tub after the cycle
Likely causeClogged filter, blocked drain hose or a failing drain pump
What we doClean the filter, check the hose loop and disposal inlet, replace the pump if weak
What you seeMachine hums but the tub stays dry
Likely causeInlet valve stuck shut or a jammed float switch
What we doTest the valve and float, and replace the valve if it will not open
What you seeDishes come out wet and cool
Likely causeHeating element open, or the rinse aid ran out
What we doTest the element and its thermostat, then refill and set the rinse aid

Whether your water bill comes from Alderwood Water & Wastewater or Silver Lake Water & Sewer, the supply behind it is the same Everett water, soft enough that a half dose of detergent usually cleans as well as a full one. If you use pods, choose the smallest your brand makes; if you use powder or gel, fill the cup halfway. Set the rinse-aid dial low, since too much leaves streaks of its own. A few European models carry a built-in softener with a salt reservoir; in water this soft, that setting belongs at its lowest step, and we set it there during the visit.
Panel-ready dishwashers bring a mechanical quirk. The cabinet-maker's wood front adds weight the door springs were not always set for, and over time the door drops open with a thud or will not stay half-closed for loading. The fix is a spring and cable adjustment, or new springs rated for the panel, and it takes far less time than most owners expect. Since the panels hide the controls on the top edge of the door, we also check that the latch and its switch line up after any cabinet work nearby. Many Bosch units in these kitchens also sit over a base pan with a float; a small drip lifts it, the cycle halts with a leak code, and the floor stays dry. We find the drip, dry the pan and clear the code.
A surprising number of Mill Creek drain calls follow a garbage disposal swap. A new disposal ships with a knockout plug in its dishwasher inlet, and if nobody punches it out, the dishwasher cannot drain at all and simply fills its tub with gray water. We also check that the drain hose rises in a high loop under the counter, so sink water cannot run back into the machine. In Mill Creek East kitchens of the 2000s, the original drain pumps are reaching the age where they start to whine, and those we replace on the spot.
Dishwasher repair in Mill Creek begins at $249, with inlet valves and latches near the bottom of the table and control boards at the top. Those figures only show where each job starts; they are not a quote for your machine. Your technician writes the exact price on an estimate once the $95 diagnostic is done, and the work waits for your go-ahead. Approve it and the diagnostic is credited to the repair. If all the machine needs is a cleared filter, a punched-out disposal plug or a dosing change, we tell you so and leave it at that.

Soft water is kind to dishwashers. Without scale building on the element, valves and spray arms, the mechanical parts last, so the question here is usually wear rather than mineral damage. A pump, valve, latch, heater or door spring is a sensible repair on nearly any machine whose tub is sound. A rusted or cracked tub, a leak from the tub seam, or a dead board on an older model whose parts are discontinued are the cases where we suggest replacement. Etched glassware is not a reason to buy a new dishwasher, since a new one in the same water with the same dose will etch just as fast. In the remodeled plat kitchens, a panel-ready unit costs more to replace because the cabinet panel must be refitted, which makes repair the stronger choice whenever the tub is still tight.
Soak a cloudy glass in white vinegar for about five minutes and rinse. If it clears, the haze was residue, and using less detergent with a little rinse aid will stop it. If it stays cloudy or feels rough, the glass is etched and cannot be restored. Lowering the dose and skipping the hottest wash on glassware keeps the rest from following.
At or near its softest step. Mill Creek's water measures about 12.5 ppm, a fraction of a grain per gallon, which leaves any built-in softener almost nothing to remove. Models with a salt reservoir rarely need salt here. A hardness setting left where it was when the machine shipped can make the machine use more rinse aid or regenerate needlessly, so your technician can set it during the visit.
Almost certainly the knockout plug. New disposals come with a sealed dishwasher inlet, and the plug has to be punched out from inside before the drain hose is attached. If that step was missed, water has nowhere to go. We remove the plug, recheck the hose connection and high loop, and run a cycle to confirm it drains.
The wood panel adds weight, and the door springs or cables were either set for a lighter panel or have stretched. Adjusting the tension, or fitting springs rated for that panel weight, brings the door back to a smooth, balanced swing. We also check the hinge arms and the latch alignment, because a hard-dropping door wears both.
Pull and rinse the filter at the bottom of the tub, look under the sink for a kinked drain hose, and make sure the water valve feeding the dishwasher is open. Confirm the breaker or switch for the dishwasher is on. If the problem continues after those checks, book a visit and leave any standing water in the tub for your technician to see.
