Cloudy glasses in very soft water: etching, film or a dishwasher fault
Etching or film? How very soft Everett water around Lynnwood clouds dishwasher glasses, a vinegar test to tell them apart, and when the machine is at fault.
Dishwashers · Mukilteo 98275
Mukilteo dishwashers rarely suffer from mineral scale. They suffer from too much soap. We fix leaks, drain faults, heating and control problems in Harbour Pointe, Old Town and Picnic Point kitchens, and help you get the dosing right too.

The water reaching Mukilteo kitchens starts in the Spada Reservoir on the Sultan River, is filtered at Everett's Chaplain plant, and arrives through the Mukilteo district and Alderwood with hardly any hardness left, averaging around 12.5 parts per million. Everett adds soda ash to nudge pH and alkalinity upward for pipe protection, so it is mildly alkaline as well. Most detergent doses are set with harder water in mind. Used at full strength here, they foam, leave a film and, over time, etch glassware into a permanent haze. The machine gets blamed for what is really a chemistry problem, and part of every Mukilteo dishwasher visit is sorting one from the other.
Kitchens split into two groups. Harbour Pointe homes from the late 1980s and 1990s are on their second or third dishwasher, often a quiet Bosch, KitchenAid or Whirlpool with electronic controls and a manual filter that needs regular rinsing. Picnic Point's 1960s and 1970s houses mostly gained their dishwashers in a remodel, which means drain hoses tied into a disposer or sink tailpiece and, now and then, a cabinet opening cut to fit an older model. Old Town kitchens add a few drawer dishwashers and panel-ready machines hidden behind cabinetry. Whichever group yours belongs to, we bring latches, inlet valves, drain pumps and heaters, the four parts behind most dishwasher calls here.

The habit that saves the most Mukilteo dishwashers is simple: use less. In water this soft, a smaller dose of powder or gel usually cleans as well as a full one, and a pod can be more than a light load needs. Keep the rinse-aid dispenser filled, since it helps water sheet off, and rinse the filter in the tub floor whenever it looks clogged. Etching, unlike hard-water film, won't come off with vinegar; if a glass stays cloudy after a vinegar soak, the damage is in the glass itself. Hand-wash crystal and older stemware if you want it to stay clear.
In Picnic Point remodels, the drain is where we look first. A dishwasher connected to a new disposer will back up if the knockout plug inside the disposer inlet was never removed, and a drain hose without a high loop or air gap lets sink water flow back into the tub. Those faults can hide for years and surface when something else changes, like a new disposer under the sink. We correct the loop and clear the path before replacing any pump, and we'll tell you if the slow drain is really the house line past the sink. Where the dishwasher shares a switched outlet with the disposer, we confirm that switch actually powers it before testing anything inside.
Many Harbour Pointe kitchens have wood or laminate flooring running under the dishwasher, and a slow leak swells it before anyone sees water. A battery leak alarm on the floor beside the sink cabinet is an inexpensive early warning. If the floor near the machine feels soft or the toe kick is damp, turn off the hot-water valve under the sink, a safe check, and call before the next run. The usual sources are a tired door gasket, a loose inlet fitting or a pump seal, all routine repairs when caught early.
Dishwasher repair in Mukilteo starts at $249. That's where the category opens, not a quote for your machine; the real price is written down after your technician runs the diagnostic, and work begins only when you approve it. The $95 diagnostic counts toward that approved repair. If the cause turns out to be dosing rather than hardware, you'll hear that before anything is replaced, along with a starting dose to try, and the visit ends there. Drawer models and panel-ready units are priced the same way.

Dishwashers sit in the middle of the repair-or-replace range. Drain pumps, latches, gaskets, inlet valves, heaters and spray arms are reasonable repairs on almost any machine. Control boards are the judgment call: on a newer Bosch or KitchenAid with a stainless tub and a quiet motor, a board is worth replacing; on a basic plastic-tub model near the end of its life, the board can approach the price of a new machine, and we'll say so. Etched glassware doesn't count against the dishwasher, since a new one would etch just the same with the same dose. For Picnic Point kitchens with an odd-sized opening, repair has an extra edge, because a replacement may need cabinet work. In Harbour Pointe's standard openings a new machine slides in easily, so the decision rests on the machine alone, and a panel-ready unit in an Old Town remodel nearly always earns a repair. Either way, you'll have our repair figure on paper before deciding.
Because it is so soft. Hard-water film is mineral and wipes off with vinegar; etching is the glass surface being eaten by detergent that has no minerals to work on, and it is permanent. Cut the dose, keep rinse aid filled and avoid the hottest wash settings for good glassware. We check the heater and dispenser to rule out a hardware cause.
No. Hand-dishwashing soap foams far more than dishwasher detergent, and in soft water the foam will push out through the door and across the floor. If it already happened, scoop out what suds you can, run a short rinse with the tub empty, and repeat until the foam is gone. If the machine then shows an error or won't drain, call us.
Yes, that is the most common setup we see. We check the disposer inlet, the hose loop and the air gap if there is one, then the dishwasher's own pump and check valve. If the clog is in the house drain past the sink, we'll tell you it needs a plumber rather than replacing parts that aren't at fault.
Not until the source is known. Turn off the water valve under the sink, wipe up and leave the machine off. A drip at the door corner is usually a gasket or a leveling problem; water from underneath can mean a pump, hose or valve. Running it again can damage flooring or the cabinet, and repairs are simpler when a leak is caught early.
Bosch, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, GE, Maytag, Frigidaire, LG, Samsung and Miele all come through, with Bosch especially common in remodeled kitchens. We repair standard built-in dishwashers and drawer models. Read the model number to us when you call, or type it into the booking form, so we can check parts before the visit.
