Dryer thermal fuse keeps blowing: find what is overheating it
A dryer thermal fuse that blows again and again is a symptom. Crawl-space vents in older houses, stuck thermostats, grounded elements and slipping blowers.
Gas and electric dryers · Mukilteo
Gas heats a little more than half of Mukilteo's homes, and the laundry room often follows the furnace. We repair gas and electric dryers from the Speedway condos to Picnic Point, starting with airflow, because a choked vent imitates almost every other fault.

Mukilteo is one of the gas-heavier towns we cover. About 53 percent of homes heat with natural gas from PSE, and where the pipe already reaches the utility room, a gas dryer is the natural pick. That shapes our calls: a gas dryer that tumbles but stays cold usually has an ignition problem, and the parts involved, igniters, valve coils and flame sensors, are nothing like the heating element in an electric model. Your technician carries both sets, along with belts, rollers and thermal fuses, so a cold drum of either fuel can usually be fixed before we leave.
The other half of the story is the vent. When the laundry room sits away from an outside wall, as it does in plenty of two-story houses from the Harbour Pointe years, the duct travels a long way, sometimes up through the roof, before it reaches open air. Condos along SR 525 vent through closets and shared walls. Every extra foot and elbow slows airflow, lint builds faster, and the dryer runs hot and long. We measure airflow before replacing any heating part, because a new igniter won't fix a blocked duct, and a thermal fuse that keeps blowing is usually the vent asking for attention.
What you seeGas: igniter glows, burner never lights
Likely causeWeak gas valve coils that can't open the valve once the igniter is hot
What we doTest the coils' resistance and replace the pair
What you seeGas: no glow at all
Likely causeCracked igniter, open flame sensor or blown thermal fuse
What we doMeter the ignition circuit and replace the failed part
What you seeElectric: drum turns, no heat
Likely causeOpen heating element, thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat
What we doTest each in order and replace the one that failed
What you seeTwo cycles to dry one load
Likely causeLint-packed or crushed duct, or a vent hood flap stuck shut
What we doMeasure airflow and clear the run from dryer to hood
What you seeSquealing or thumping as it turns
Likely causeWorn drum rollers, idler pulley or glides; frayed belt
What we doReplace the worn rollers, idler, glides or belt
What you seeStops a few minutes into the cycle
Likely causeOverheating motor, lint in the blower, or a failing door switch
What we doClean the blower housing, test motor and switch, replace as needed
If you ever smell gas near the dryer, don't go looking for the leak or touch a light switch. Get everyone outdoors and call PSE or 911 from there. Once the utility has made the line safe, the appliance side is ours: igniters, coils, flame sensors and burner assemblies inside the cabinet. Gas piping in the walls and floor belongs to a gas fitter, and we'll say so if that is where the problem sits. When a gas dryer is pulled out for any repair, your technician also checks that the shutoff valve turns and that nothing behind the machine is kinked or crushed.
Houses on the bluff above Mukilteo Boulevard and along Chennault Beach take the wind straight off the Sound, and that wind finds the dryer vent. A hood flap that sticks, or a nest built in the opening during spring, blocks airflow just as well as lint does. Watching the flap swing open while the dryer runs is a quick outdoor check, and clearing the lint screen before every load is the other habit worth keeping. Long drying times that appear suddenly after a windy week often point to the hood rather than the machine. Salt air also works on metal hoods over the years, and a rusted flap that no longer swings open is an inexpensive part to replace.
In the multi-unit buildings along the Speedway, dryers are often compact or stacked electric models venting into ducts that run through the building. We clean and test the run from the dryer to the wall and whatever portion beyond it we can reach, and we'll tell you if the restriction lies in a shared duct the building manages, so you can take it to the right person. Compact models also run hotter by design, which makes their thermal fuses and high-limit thermostats the first parts to check when the drum goes cold.

Dryer repair in Mukilteo starts at $229, the lowest of our six categories. It is a starting point, not a quote: once your technician has checked airflow, heat and drive, the written estimate shows the real price, and work begins only when you approve it. The $95 diagnostic rolls into that repair. Have the washer looked at on the same trip and its diagnostic is $10 less, which makes a laundry-room visit for both machines an easy way to deal with two nagging problems at once. Vent clearing, when needed, appears as its own line on the estimate.
| Blocked vent cleared to the outside | from $229 |
|---|---|
| Thermal fuse or cycling thermostat | from $229 |
| Heating element (electric) | from $239 |
| Drum rollers, idler pulley, belt | from $239 |
| Igniter and gas valve coils | from $249 |
| Control board | from $259 |
| Diagnostic visit | $95, counted toward the repair |
| Another appliance on the same call | $10 off its diagnostic |

Dryers are simple machines, and most of the ones we open in Mukilteo deserve a repair. Igniters, coils, elements, fuses, belts, rollers and thermostats are modest jobs, and the drum, motor and cabinet usually have plenty of life left. We start leaning toward replacement when the control board and the motor fail together, when the drum seam has split, or when a gas burner assembly has rusted badly after years of damp, slow venting. A stacked condo unit is a special case: if the washer half is also failing, replacing the pair may beat repairing one side. And before buying a new dryer for a laundry room with a long duct, have the vent sorted out first. A new machine on a choked vent will dry just as slowly from its first load and wear out its heating parts at the same pace as the old one did. We'll put the repair number in writing so you can weigh it calmly.
Long drying isn't a gas leak, but it does mean heat is building up where it shouldn't, usually because of a restricted vent. Clean the lint screen, check that the outside hood opens, and avoid running loads while nobody is home until it has been checked. Should a gas odor appear at any point, get out of the house and phone PSE or 911 once you're outdoors.
Yes, as part of a dryer repair. We clear the duct from the back of the dryer to the outside hood, measure airflow before and after, and fix the transition hose if it is crushed. On roof vents and shared condo ducts we clean what can be reached safely from inside and tell you plainly if the rest needs the building's own crew or a roofer.
Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, LG, Samsung, Electrolux, Frigidaire and Bosch, gas and electric, plus the stacked laundry centers built from the same components. Older belt-drive models and newer machines with electronic controls both come up often. If yours is an unusual European compact, read the model number to us on the phone so we can confirm parts first.
Clean the lint screen, confirm the door closes firmly, and look at the breaker; electric dryers sit on a 240-volt double breaker, and a partial power fault there can leave the drum spinning with no heat. For a gas dryer, make sure the shutoff valve behind it is open. Don't remove panels, and if the breaker trips again, leave it off and call us.
We can often be there the day you call, Monday through Saturday, and a morning call gives you the likeliest slot. Harbour Pointe is the quicker part of Mukilteo for us to reach; Old Town and Picnic Point take a little longer. Neither carries a surcharge, and we are closed on Sundays.
