Picture a full-size dryer in a Mountlake Terrace house from the 1950s or 60s: usually electric, often in the garage or a converted utility corner, venting out through the nearest wall. Now picture a compact dryer in one of the newer apartments, stacked over a washer in a closet, sometimes exhausting into a long shared duct and sometimes not exhausting outdoors at all. The garage dryers often have mechanical timers and simple controls, and many have outlived two or three washers beside them; the stacked ones run on boards and sensors, so their faults lean electronic and the diagnosis starts with the control rather than the drum.

That last group surprises people. Some newer buildings use ventless condenser or heat-pump dryers, which recirculate the air, pull the moisture out of it and send the water down a drain or into a container you empty. They run longer than a vented dryer by design, and their problems are their own: a condenser clogged with lint, a second filter nobody knew about, a pump that quit. A slow ventless dryer is not necessarily a broken one, especially when the closet around it is warm and humid, and part of our job is telling you which situation you are in before any money is spent.

Mountlake Terrace dryer symptoms, decoded

  1. What you seeVentless dryer runs for hours and clothes stay damp

Likely causeLint-packed condenser, a skipped second filter or a failed pump

What we doClean the condenser path, test the pump and check the drain line

  2. What you seeElectric model turns the drum, but no warmth comes out

Likely causeOpen element, a blown thermal fuse or only half of the 240-volt supply

What we doTest the receptacle first, then the element, fuse and thermostats

  3. What you seeGas dryer heats, cuts out, then will not relight

Likely causeGas valve coils weakening once they warm up

What we doTest and replace the coils, then watch a full heating cycle

  4. What you seeAuto-dry ends early and the load is still damp

Likely causeMoisture sensor bars coated with dryer-sheet residue

What we doClean the bars, test the sensing circuit and suggest skipping sheets

  5. What you seeRumble or a steady thump with every turn

Likely causeWorn drum rollers or a roller with a flat spot

What we doReplace the rollers, and the belt as well if it is cracked or glazed

  6. What you seeDryer stops partway through and restarts after cooling

Likely causeRestricted exhaust tripping the cycling or high-limit thermostat

What we doMeasure the airflow, clear the restriction and replace a weakened thermostat

Stacked closets, garage dryers and wet vent hoods

Stacked units in Mountlake Terrace's newer buildings live in closets with louvered or solid doors, and how that closet breathes matters more than most owners expect. A vented dryer behind a solid door can starve for intake air and run hot; a ventless one gives off a little warmth and humidity that the closet has to absorb. Before replacing a part, your technician looks at how the closet is set up, how much room there is behind the stack and whether the exhaust connection survived the last time the unit was pulled out for cleaning.

A dryer in a post-war garage breathes whatever air the garage has, and through the wet season that air is cold and damp, so drying takes longer even when nothing is wrong. The outside vent hood takes a beating too: convergence-zone showers soak the lint caught on the flap, it clumps, and a hood that stays half closed explains a surprising number of healthy dryers that run hot and slow here. Clearing the hood is a quick job worth doing every few months.

About 32 percent of homes here heat with gas, so gas dryers turn up regularly alongside the electric ones. If you ever smell gas at the dryer, head outside first and ring PSE or 911 from the yard; we come once the gas side is cleared. Electric dryers in older houses often still use a three-prong cord; we match the cord to the receptacle you have and configure the ground strap to suit it, and if the receptacle or the circuit behind it is the problem, that part belongs to an electrician. When a gas dryer goes back against the wall after a repair, we check that its flexible gas connector is not kinked or crushed behind it.

Worth repairing, or time for a new dryer?

A basic electric dryer from a post-war garage is one of the most repairable appliances in any house. Elements, fuses, thermostats, rollers, belts and switches are inexpensive and quick to change, and the drum and motor often last for decades. Repair almost always wins there unless the drum is rusting or the motor drags. Gas dryers are much the same, with igniters and valve coils as routine fixes. Ventless and heat-pump models in Town Center apartments are pricier to repair, but they are usually young, and a pump, sensor or board is normally worth replacing. The case for a new dryer builds when an older electronic model needs a board plus another major part, or when one half of an aging stacked pair quits and the other half is not far behind. You get a written price and a straight answer about whether we would fix it ourselves.

Common questions

Is a ventless dryer supposed to take this long?

Longer cycles are normal for ventless condenser and heat-pump dryers, because they dry with lower, gentler heat and recycle the air. What is not normal is a load that stays damp after a full cycle, water on the floor, or a cycle that keeps getting longer. Clean both lint filters and the condenser as the manual describes; if it still struggles, we test the pump, sensors and airflow.

Should the laundry closet door stay closed while the dryer runs?

It depends on the door and the dryer. A louvered door lets a vented dryer draw air; a solid door can starve it unless the closet has another opening. Ventless models release some heat and moisture into the room, so a little ventilation helps them too. If your closet feels hot or humid after a cycle, tell us at booking and your technician will look at the setup.

Can I keep using dryer sheets?

You can, but they leave a waxy film on the lint screen and on the moisture sensor bars inside the drum. A coated sensor reads the load as dry too early, so the cycle ends with damp clothes. Wash the lint screen with warm soapy water now and then, and wipe the sensor bars with rubbing alcohol. Wool dryer balls avoid the problem entirely.

My dryer is in the garage. Does that matter?

It can. A dryer in a cold, damp garage draws in air that is harder to heat and already carries moisture, so cycles run longer in winter even when the dryer is healthy. Keep the area around it clear, check that the vent hood outside swings open easily, and do not store anything flammable beside it. If drying time jumps suddenly, that points to a fault rather than the weather.

Can you tell whether the problem is the dryer or the building's vent?

Usually, yes. We measure airflow with the dryer connected and then with the exhaust disconnected. If the dryer moves air well on its own but poorly once connected, the restriction is in the duct. If the duct belongs to the building, we note what we found in writing so you can pass it to the manager or association.

Something not working?

Call (425) 287-5458 or use the online form, mentioning whether your dryer is vented, ventless or gas. An approved repair absorbs the $95 diagnostic, and customers aged 65 and up, veterans and military families get as much as $18 off the repair.
