Ice makers
Small or hollow ice cubes: following the water back to the wall
Small, thin or hollow ice cubes usually trace back to the water supply: saddle valves in older houses, wall valve boxes in new townhomes, filters and sensors.
Ice makers · Harbour Pointe to Picnic Point
An ice maker depends on a thin water line, a valve, a filter and a freezer that holds its temperature. When the cubes stop in a Mukilteo kitchen, any of the four can be the cause, and we test them in order before replacing anything.

Water for a Mukilteo ice maker travels a long way before it freezes. In many houses a thin line tees off a cold-water pipe under the sink or in the crawlspace, runs behind the cabinets and connects to a valve on the back of the refrigerator. In Harbour Pointe homes from the 1990s that line can still be the original copper, sometimes tapped with an old saddle valve; in remodeled kitchens it may be plastic tubing pushed behind a new fridge. Either can kink, crack or freeze, and the ice maker takes the blame. Sliding the refrigerator back too far after cleaning is enough to pinch a plastic line shut.
Inside the refrigerator the parts are few: a fill valve, a filter, the ice maker module with its motor and shutoff arm or sensor, and, on door-dispensing models, an auger and a chute. French-door refrigerators from LG, Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid and Frigidaire, common across Harbour Pointe, make ice in the fresh-food door, where a heater, a fan and a well-sealed compartment all have to cooperate. Older side-by-sides and top-freezers in Picnic Point keep a simpler tray-style unit in the freezer. In a bottom-freezer model the ice maker rides in a drawer that gets yanked open all day, so a sticky bin or a bent shutoff arm is a common find. We carry fill valves and the most common modules.

Winter is when Mukilteo ice makers go quiet. A line that runs through an outside wall, an unheated crawlspace or along the garage side of a kitchen can freeze during a cold snap, and the refrigerator keeps calling for water that never arrives. If cubes stop during a freeze, see whether the water dispenser still flows; if it doesn't, the line is likely frozen. Let it thaw on its own rather than applying heat, and call us if flow doesn't come back or water appears where it shouldn't. Once it's flowing again, we can reroute or insulate the exposed stretch so the same spot doesn't freeze next winter.
Long outages are hard on ice makers too. When the November 2024 bomb cyclone cut power to more than 70,000 PUD customers, plenty of ice bins melted and refroze into a single block, and an auger motor straining against that block when power returns can burn out. After any long outage, empty the bin and let the ice maker start fresh. If it doesn't restart, the module or a fuse on the refrigerator's board may have taken a hit. A bin of refrozen ice can also hide a freezer that is struggling, so we read the freezer temperature on every ice maker visit.
The very soft Spada water that Mukilteo shares with most of Snohomish County is kind to fill valves; the scale that chokes valves in hard-water towns is rare here. What does reach the valve screen is the occasional grit stirred up when a water main is flushed or repaired nearby. If a fresh filter doesn't bring back full cubes, the screen inside the valve is our next suspect, and replacing the valve usually restores full-size cubes within a few batches.

Ice maker repair in Mukilteo starts at $289, the highest of our starting points, because the work often involves the freezer, the door and the water line together. That number marks the bottom of the category rather than a quote, and the exact price is on the written estimate after your technician finds the cause. The $95 diagnostic is credited to the repair if you approve it. When the culprit is just an overdue filter or a closed valve, we show you and the diagnostic covers the visit. Line repairs between the shutoff and the refrigerator are quoted the same way.

Repairing an ice maker almost always beats replacing a refrigerator over it. Fill valves, modules, filters, lines and dispenser motors are self-contained parts, and once the fault is found the fix is usually done in one visit. The math changes only when the ice maker is a symptom of something bigger. If the freezer can't hold temperature because the sealed system is failing, which is work we don't do, the refrigerator is what needs replacing. If a French-door model keeps icing up in the door compartment even after a seal and heater repair, that design may simply be prone to it, and some owners choose to switch the door unit off and use a freezer tray instead. In older Picnic Point houses, we replace the line from the shutoff valve to the refrigerator; a leak in pipe inside a wall or crawlspace is a plumber's job, and we'll say which one you have. On a refrigerator young enough to still carry the maker's warranty, check that coverage first.
The mold isn't getting a full fill. The usual reasons are a clogged refrigerator filter, a supply valve under the sink that isn't fully open, a kinked line behind the fridge, or a fill valve whose screen is partly blocked. Change the filter first if it's overdue. If the cubes stay small, we measure the fill and replace the valve or line as needed.
Yes, the refrigerator can keep cooling. Turn off the supply valve that feeds the ice line, usually under the sink or behind the fridge, switch the ice maker off, and empty the bin. Wipe up any water so it doesn't reach the flooring. Then book a visit; most leaks come from the fill valve or a fitting on the back of the cabinet.
No. We repair ice makers built into refrigerators and freezers, whether they sit in the freezer or in the door. Countertop ice machines count as small appliances, which we don't take on, and dedicated under-counter ice machines and commercial equipment are outside our work too. If you're unsure which you have, read us the model number and we'll tell you.
Usually not. Ice absorbs odors from the freezer, so stale-tasting cubes often mean old ice, an overdue filter or food stored uncovered nearby. Empty the bin, change the filter, and discard the first couple of batches. If the taste returns quickly or the water itself tastes odd, we check the filter housing, the line and the valve for a problem.
Often that same day, Monday through Saturday, and calling in the morning gives you the surest chance. Harbour Pointe is the closest part of Mukilteo for us; Old Town and Picnic Point take longer but cost the same. Typing the refrigerator's model number into the booking form lets us bring a matching valve or module.
