In many Everett rentals the ice maker was switched off or never connected, and in houses near Silver Lake it's the first thing the kids notice when it quits. We repair built-in ice makers in both, tracing the water from shutoff to bin.

A surprising number of Everett ice maker calls start with a refrigerator that was never fully hooked up. In apartments and duplexes, a landlord may have capped the water line to avoid leaks, the valve under the sink may be closed, or the previous tenant switched the ice maker off and nobody switched it back on. Before we replace anything, we confirm that water is reaching the refrigerator, that the filter isn't blocking it and that the ice maker is actually turned on. That check alone settles some calls. Refrigerators delivered to recently renovated units sometimes arrive with the water line coiled behind them, never attached.

When something is broken, the list of suspects is short: the solenoid valve where the line enters the cabinet, the filter, the ice maker itself and, where ice comes through the door, an auger motor and a chute. Owner-occupied houses near Silver Lake tend toward LG, Whirlpool, GE and KitchenAid French-door models that build their ice maker into the fresh-food door, which adds a heater, a fan and seals to the list. Top-freezer rental models usually have a simpler tray-style unit, and bottom-freezer townhome models keep it up in the freezer drawer, where a bin knocked off its track stops everything. We carry valves and common modules.

Heat, outages and lines under the floor

Ice production follows freezer temperature, and freezer temperature follows the kitchen. Paine Field's official record is 100°F, and about 104°F was reported near I-5 in June 2021. In a top-floor south Everett apartment without air conditioning, a refrigerator in a tight alcove runs hard just to keep food cold, and the ice maker is the first thing to fall behind. Keeping space around the cabinet and the bottom grille clear helps. If ice stays slow after the heat passes, we test the condenser fan and freezer temperature. A freezer that keeps ice cream hard yet turns out little ice in July is usually working under strain, not broken.

Outages leave their own mark. When the PUD had more than 70,000 customers dark during the November 2024 windstorm, many freezers thawed partway, and half-melted cubes fused into slabs that jam augers and bend shutoff arms. If your power has been out for a long stretch, empty the bin and dry it before the ice maker restarts, and toss the first couple of batches, which can carry stale water from the line. If it won't restart, the module or the refrigerator's board may need testing.

In houses around Silver Lake, the ice line often runs from under the sink, through the cabinets or the basement, to the back of the fridge. In manufactured homes it may run under the floor, where a cold snap can freeze it. If a line freezes, leave it to thaw on its own, don't reach for a heat gun or open flame, and call if flow doesn't return. The tubing between the shutoff and the fridge is ours to replace; leaks inside walls or under the home are for a plumber. Plastic tubing in older rentals turns brittle with age, and a line that cracks when touched should be replaced, not patched.

Ice maker repair cost in Everett

Ice maker repair in Everett starts at $289, our highest category starting point, because these jobs can involve the water supply, the dispenser and the freezer all at once. Treat it as an entry figure, not your price; your exact price appears on the written estimate after the diagnostic, and work waits for approval. Your $95 diagnostic is subtracted from that repair once it's approved. If the whole fix turns out to be opening a valve or flipping the ice maker back on, we point it out and you owe only the diagnostic. Ice maker modules and fill valves are usually in the vehicle, so most repairs finish in one trip.

Fix the ice maker or move on?

An ice maker repair is almost always cheaper than a new refrigerator, so the real question is whether the refrigerator itself is healthy. If the fresh-food and freezer sections hold temperature and only the ice maker has failed, fix it: valves, modules, lines and dispenser motors are contained repairs. If the freezer can't stay cold because the compressor or refrigerant circuit is giving out, which we don't repair, the whole refrigerator should be replaced. Landlords sometimes decide to disable the ice maker in a rental rather than repair it, especially if the unit has leaked before; that's a reasonable choice, and we can cap the line properly so it doesn't drip. Switching the ice maker off without capping the line, by contrast, leaves a pressurized valve behind the fridge that nobody is watching. For owner-occupied homes with French-door models, a door ice maker that keeps icing up may need seal, heater or fan work, which is usually worth doing once. We put the repair price in writing first.

Common questions

My rental fridge has an ice maker but it's never made ice. Can you check it?

Yes. Often the cause is simple: the supply valve is closed, the water line was capped, or the ice maker switch is off. If the line was never connected, check with your landlord, who may prefer it stay disconnected. If water reaches the refrigerator and it still makes no ice, we test the valve and module and quote the repair.

Why does my ice maker slow down in summer?

Ice making depends on freezer temperature, and freezers lose ground in hot kitchens. In apartments without air conditioning, a refrigerator in a tight space may run constantly and still fall behind. Clear space around it, keep the bottom grille open and limit door openings. If output stays low on mild days, we check the condenser fan and freezer temperature.

Can you cap or disconnect an ice maker water line?

Yes. If a landlord or owner prefers not to use the ice maker, we shut off and cap the line at the refrigerator properly and turn the ice maker off, so nothing drips or cycles. If you later want ice again, the line can be reconnected and tested. Mention it when you book so we bring the right fittings.

The ice maker leaked. Is my floor damaged?

Turn off the supply valve, switch off the ice maker, and dry the area. If the floor is soft or discolored, or the leak reached a unit below, tell your manager. We find and fix the leak source, most often the inlet valve or a compression nut, and note it on the estimate; flooring repair is outside our work.

How quickly can you get to Mariner or Silver Lake?

Both are on the closer side of our Everett range, so same-day visits Monday through Saturday are often possible, especially with a morning call. Entering the refrigerator's model number in the booking form helps us bring the matching valve or ice maker module. There's no surcharge for distance.
